Two members of the MI Branch of LIJE, Suzanne Hall and Mary Lou Temple, represented the Michigan branch in Lansing at the LWML Convention (Lutheran Women's Missionary League). Over six hundred women met in July to hear mission speakers, select mission projects for the next two years, fellowship and conduct business.
An open Bible directed people to the verse in Romans 1:16, where Paul states, "For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ, for it is the power of salvation for all who believe...to the Jew first..."
Many women were open to hear about the work of LIJE: direct Jewish evangelism as well as educating Christians about the Jewish roots of their faith. Many visitors acknowledged that they knew Jewish people or were related to them by marriage.
LIJE speakers will come to your church group or Christian day school to explain about the ministry of LIJE. Call Mary Lou at 248-626-4076 for more information.
The Michigan branch spent a weekend in outreach in the metro area of Detroit. On Saturday, April 26, 2008, several volunteers canvassed neighborhoods near Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Bloomfield Hills with an invitation to attend the movie “Cast a Giant Shadow” on May 13, 7:00 p.m. at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, 1100 Lone Pine Rd. The movie is centered on the establishment of Israel declared a nation on May 14, 1948. Discussion will follow.
On Sunday, April 27, 2008, LIJE Executive Director Rev. Kevin Parviz spoke at St. Augustine Lutheran Church in Troy, MI relating his life experience from being a Jewish atheist to becoming a Christian pastor. Pastor Parviz and St. Augustine Pastor Paul Monson were seminary students together.
Other congregations would be greatly inspired if they invite Pastor Parviz as a guest speaker. His bible study is awesome. He reveals how to share the Gospel with a Jewish person without mentioning Jesus’ name and using only the Old Testament (Tanakh)
In recognition of the 60th anniversary of Israel’s statehood, the Michigan branch of Lutherans in Jewish Evangelism is hosting the movie “Cast a Giant Shadow” on Tuesday, May 14, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. The movie depicts Israel at the time of this sudden event back on May 14, 1948 and will be shown in the chapel at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church. There is no charge and all interested persons are invited to attend. This is a great opportunity to build relationships with Jewish family and friends so invite those who God places on your heart.
Director Parviz met with Rev. Roosevelt Gray, Mission Director of the Michigan District, LC-MS while in Michigan to discuss opportunities to create awareness of LIJE within the churches of the Michigan District. As a result of this meeting, a convocation of the many ethnic ministries is expected in the next few months to consider establishing a mission church focused on multi-ethnic members.
Members of the Michigan branch attended the 44th annual antique show hosted by Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, Bloomfield, Michigan to hand out broadsides. The theme of the broadside focused on art with Y'Shua being the greatest artist of all. The venue and event attract thousands of people for the three-day event from the metro area of Detroit and in an area heavily populated by Jewish people.
Members of the Michigan Branch of LIJE work with a local Messianic congregation in the metro Detroit area during summer festivals. Earlier this summer they passed out thousands of broadsides at the Ann Arbor Art Show. Recently broadsides were handed out at the seventh largest art festival in America sponsored by the city of Pontiac. There is increasingly more resistance to our freedom to participate in these activities. Broadsides were relegated to outside the festival grounds, but our efforts still provide considerable opportunity.
